Catalysta’s Mission

Catalysta is the online forum to explore and develop jobs and companies that are socially responsible. Rather than concentrate exclusively on not-for-profit or environmental careers, Catalysta considers any job, from police officer to lawyer to engineer, and asks how it can be more socially responsible.

About Catalysta

Three themes inform Catalysta’s mission and our approach to content development:

The Sphere of Responsibility
What is the range of an individual’s social responsibility? Should we include family, community, country, ecosystem, or all sentient beings? How can our professional talents benefit the common good? Our answers to these questions shape the quality of our careers and our lives.

The Role of the Citizen
Many believe that constitutional democracies and republics must promote certain essentials, such as equality before the law, civil liberties, freedom of speech and press, voting access, and the capacity to participate freely in the life of society, among others. At minimum, professional life should do no harm, and at best, it should strive to protect and enhance these freedoms.

Ethics
Catalysta considers professional ethics in three segments: What is a profession’s standard of excellence? What is the quality of a company’s mission and how is it maintained? What are the intentions and actions of the organization’s employees? Are the three parts in harmony?

Ultimately, the meaning of social responsibility is a personal concern based on each individual’s perception, intentions, and actions. For this reason, career development is intimately linked to personal development, where qualities such as perseverance, awareness, and clarity take center stage. Catalysta exists to explore career and personal development with the aim of serving the common good.
