Now’s the time to explore and develop a career enlivened by social responsibility. Catalysta aims to produce engaging content, helpful tools,
and a forum for people to interact in ways that are fun and prodzuctive. Three concepts frame our ongoing inquiry into the nature of social responsibility:

• Our sphere of responsibility
• Professional ethics
• The citizen’s role

What are the limits of responsibility? Social responsibility begins with perception and choice. To what degree am I responsible for my family, community,
country, and even the ecosystem? How can my professional talents be employed to creatively contribute to the greater community? An ever-unfolding
response to these questions can shape a career.

Let’s consider ethics in terms of profession, organization, and the individual. What is a given profession’s standard of excellence? Who defines it and
is it upheld? Many companies define their mission. Are their guidelines in sync with their behavior? At the individual level, we have the capacity to turn our attention to our intentions and actions. How often do we do so? These three spheres combine to define the ethical quality of a career.

Constitutional democracies and republics change over time, but many people believe certain components are essential, such as equality before the
law; civil liberties; human rights; freedom of political expression, speech, the press; due process; the right to petition elected officials for the redress of grievances; access to vote according to one’s best interests; and the capacity of individuals to participate freely and fully in the life of society.
At minimum, our professional lives should do no harm to these freedoms and pursuits. At best, we should strive to protect and enhance them.

To be invested in these issues is to be a trailblazer. Many organizations pay lip service to social responsibility, but real effort is required to consider the meaning of social responsibility and even more energy to act. Catalysta proposes that inquisitiveness and perseverance are essential to develop the awareness, clarity and capacity necessary for beneficial action. It’s easy to be pessimistic, but the potential impact of a small group should not be underestimated.
